ADAS Features and Your Insurance Rate: What Actually Discounts

Automatic braking, lane assist, adaptive cruise — some cut your rate, some raise repair costs.

ADAS Features and Your Insurance Rate: What Actually Discounts

Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) are on almost every new car sold since 2022. The relationship between ADAS and your premium is more nuanced than it looks.

The Good News

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety data shows ADAS-equipped vehicles have measurably fewer claims:

  • Forward collision warning + auto emergency braking: 27% fewer front-to-rear claims
  • Blind spot monitoring: 14% fewer lane-change crashes
  • Rear auto braking: 78% fewer backing crashes

Carriers factor this into rates for equipped vehicles — you do not need to do anything.

The Bad News

ADAS-equipped cars cost more to repair. A bumper with radar sensors and a camera can cost $3,000–$5,000 to replace and recalibrate. When you do have a claim, it is bigger — which partially offsets the discount.

Net Effect

For most drivers, ADAS is a small net win on premium (2–5% lower than a comparable non-ADAS vehicle). The bigger benefit is fewer claims on your record, which compounds into cleaner-record discounts over time.

What to Ask Your Carrier

  • Do you offer a specific ADAS discount, or is it baked into the vehicle rating?
  • What is the surcharge if I need a windshield with a camera replaced?
  • Do you cover OEM calibration or aftermarket?
