We surveyed 620 US EV owners about their insurance experience. The gap between expectation and reality is wider than for any other vehicle class we have surveyed.

Key Findings

  • 68% expected EV insurance to be cheaper than a gas car. Only 12% actually pay less.
  • Average premium premium for EVs vs comparable gas: +22%
  • 41% did not shop their EV policy at purchase — they added to existing coverage
  • Of those who shopped, 58% got quotes varying by more than $600/yr

Biggest Surprises for EV Owners

  1. Higher premiums than gas (mentioned by 61%)
  2. Longer repair wait times (44%)
  3. Restricted repair networks (28%)
  4. Higher deductibles required by carrier (14%)

What EV Owners Wish They Had Known

  • Shop specifically for EV coverage — the spread between carriers is largest here
  • Ask about battery coverage terms up front
  • Confirm your repair shop is in-network before you need it
