Virginia Ends Uninsured Motorist Fee

Virginia drivers can no longer pay the $500 fee in lieu of coverage — what it means for rates.

Virginia Ends Uninsured Motorist Fee

Virginia is one of only two states that historically let drivers pay a fee ($500/yr) instead of buying auto insurance. That option is being phased out.

What Changed

Starting in 2024, Virginia raised minimum liability limits to $50,000/$100,000 bodily injury and $25,000 property damage — and the uninsured motorist fee is being eliminated.

Who This Affects

  • The ~10,000 Virginia drivers currently paying the fee must now buy coverage
  • Existing insured drivers may see small rate increases as the uninsured pool shrinks

The Bigger Picture

States are steadily raising minimum liability limits — Virginia's move mirrors similar changes in California, Utah, and Delaware over the past 5 years. Old minimum-liability policies are increasingly inadequate for real-world claims.

If you carry only state minimums, price an upgrade to $100K/$300K limits. On most policies, the difference is $15–30 per month.
